Video Game Music

I was commissioned to compose the music for the final section in the game 'Gloria', a music-lead experience about overcoming loneliness and understanding other people's hardships. The 'Tower of Babel' theme at the start signifies the tower beckoning the player to come towards the tower. Once you explore to the top of the tower, the final interaction begins. The simple, sorrowful theme first heard at the start by the piano develops into a joyous, beautiful sound as the instruments you interacted with along the way join in. The music is dynamic as the different stages of gameplay begin.

Self-Study Work

3D Platformer

The videos below explore my orchestral/hybrid writing for 3D platformer games - Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Galaxy - which I composed music over as part of my final year composition portfolio studies. Each level I chose to write for has its own unique theme; from a poisonous jungle, a vast desert, strongholds, outer space and battle sequences. I used the video clips from each level to create soundscapes and ideas before composing the final theme for each one:

Piranha Creeper Creek
Dusty Dune Galaxy
Battlerock Galaxy
Battlerock Galaxy Bowser Battle
Bowser's Galaxy Generator
Final Bowser Battle

The open-world style of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild poses more challenges musically than other more linear games. Having the ability to explore whatever you want whenever you want means the music needs to be able to adapt to on-screen gameplay as a non-linear design.

The clip below explores that style of non-linear writing, starting with an ambient track for the general exploration of the Gerudo Desert. The character then enters into a combat sequence with the Molduga enemy, and the music adapts accordingly. This combat theme has three stages:

 - Hidden

- Vulnerable

- Death

The examples below showcase some of my writing for existing mobile video games Super Mario Run and Candy Crush. I have recorded gameplay footage and layered my compositions for each one over the top whilst considering the limitations of this specific platform's audio ability:

Axe of Kings: Main ThemeTim Burnelis
00:00 / 01:56

Axe of Kings is a 2D, pixel-art adventure game for mobile. The main theme conjures a sense of excitement and anticipation used to set the feel of the game and prepare the player for the adventure ahead. The synth 8-bit sound samples blended with the orchestra helps to give the theme an old-school sound. I gave the main theme contrasting sections to reflect its turn-based gameplay.
